Braided fishing line is made by weaving four, eight or more strands of gel-spun polyethylene, the fibre sold as Spectra and Dyneema, into a single line. The fibre is stronger for its thickness than anything else on a spool, so braid is about a third of the diameter of nylon monofilament at the same breaking strain and it stretches almost not at all. Those two facts give braid everything it is praised for, distance, capacity, sensitivity and hooksets, and everything it is blamed for, visibility, fraying on rock and wind knots. Rigged right, with a leader and a few turns of backing, braid gives you the first four without the last three; rigged wrong, it does the opposite, and the table below says when mono or fluorocarbon is the better line.
Thirty-pound braid is about the diameter of eight-pound monofilament. That is the whole reason the category exists.
What you need
- A reel with a spool that suits braid: any spinning reel, and any baitcaster if the line is 30 lb or heavier. The reels hub covers both.
- Monofilament for backing, a few yards of 8–10 lb to grip the arbor.
- Fluorocarbon or mono for leaders, in the test the technique wants; the line hub has the comparison.
- Braid-rated scissors. Braid does not cut cleanly with a knife or nail clippers.
Pound test and diameter
The manufacturers rate braid by breaking strain and by the monofilament diameter it matches, which is the number that matters for casting and spool capacity. The retail diameter chart below was compiled from Berkley Trilene and Big Game (mono), Berkley Vanish (fluorocarbon) and SpiderWire Stealth (braid); the PowerPro equivalents are the maker’s own.

Two consequences follow. A spool that holds 150 yards of 12 lb mono holds several hundred yards of 30 lb braid, and a 20 lb braid casts a light lure as far as 6 lb mono would. The answer to “is 20 lb braid stronger than 20 lb mono” is that they break at the same nominal load; braid is the same strength at a third of the thickness, and most braids test over their label.
Strands, coatings and colours
Four-carrier braid is rounder, rougher and more abrasion-resistant; eight-carrier is smoother, quieter through the guides and casts farther; nine-strand constructions such as Berkley X9 hold a rounder profile still. Coatings add stiffness and colour, and the colour fades with use. Rigging braid so it works, step by step
- Back the spool with mono. Braid slips on a bare metal arbor. Tie 8–10 lb mono to the spool with an arbor knot, wind on enough to cover the arbor, then join the braid with a double uni knot.
- Spool under tension, running the line through a damp cloth or your fingers, with the filler spool’s label facing up so the line comes off counter-clockwise and does not twist. Fill to about 1/8 in (3 mm) below the lip; overfilled braid throws wind knots.
- Add a leader in clear water or around rock and shell. Braid is visible and frays; a 2–6 ft (0.6–1.8 m) fluorocarbon leader of 8–20 lb gives invisibility and abrasion resistance at the lure, joined with an FG knot (strongest and slimmest through the guides) or a double uni (easier, bulkier).
- Tie the right knots. A Palomar to the lure, wetted and pulled tight; a clinch knot slips on braid. Leave a longer tag than you would on mono.
- Set the drag lighter than the label suggests. Braid digs into itself under load; PowerPro’s own guidance is a lighter drag than the same test in mono. A quarter of the breaking strain is plenty.
- Close the bail by hand on a spinning reel and give the line a tug before the retrieve, so a loose loop does not become a wind knot on the next cast.
- Retire it by feel, not by calendar. Braid does not weaken in sunlight the way nylon does and lasts two to five seasons; cut back the first few yards when they fray or lose colour.

The rule under the table: braid for single-hook baits and heavy cover, mono or fluorocarbon for treble hooks and for anything that must be invisible.
Mistakes to avoid
- Braid on a light baitcaster. Under 30 lb it digs into the spool on a backlash and cannot be picked out; 40–65 lb is the baitcaster range.
- Braid straight to the lure in clear water. Fish see it, and it frays on the first rock. Add the leader.
- Winding on a slack spool. Loose coils bury under load and pull off in clumps; spool under tension.
- Trusting a clinch knot. It slips on braid; use a Palomar, an FG or a double uni.
- Fishing braid where it is banned. A few fisheries restrict braided line, usually to protect fish or other users from line that does not break; check the regulations for the water.
When to use something else
Monofilament is cheaper, floats, stretches 25–30% and forgives a hard hookset on trebles; fluorocarbon sinks, stretches 10–15%, is nearly invisible and resists abrasion.
