Privacy policy

The short version: one analytics cookie outside Europe, none inside it, no tracking across the web, and we only keep an email address if you give it to us for the newsletter.

What we collect

• Visits. Two counters. Cloudflare Web Analytics counts page views without cookies, without fingerprinting and without storing your IP address. Google Analytics 4 counts sessions and, outside the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, sets a first-party cookie (_ga, two years) to tell a returning visitor from a new one; IP addresses are not stored. If you are in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland, Google Analytics sets no cookie on this site and you are not asked for consent because none is needed: you are simply not counted. Anyone can block it with a browser setting or extension; the site works the same. Google processes this data under its privacy policy; we use it to see which pages are read and where readers come from, never to identify anyone.
• Hosting logs. The site is served by Cloudflare. Cloudflare processes your IP address to deliver the page and to block abuse, under its own privacy policy. We do not receive those logs.
• Newsletter. If you sign up, your email address and the date and page of sign-up are stored with our email provider, Encharge, until you unsubscribe. Every mail has an unsubscribe link, and we send nothing you did not ask for. We never sell or share the list.
• Email you send us. Kept as long as the conversation needs it.

What we do not do

• No advertising cookies, no retargeting, no social-media pixels. The analytics cookie is the only one.
• No accounts, no comments, no profiles.
• No selling of data, to anyone, ever.

Links and affiliate links

Articles link to manufacturers, retailers and sources. Some retailer links may become affiliate links, which means the retailer may pay us a small commission if you buy after clicking; the price you pay is the same. The retailer's own privacy policy applies once you are on its site. See the affiliate disclosure.

Advertising, when it comes

This site shows no ads today. If it does in future, the ad network will need to measure visits, which may involve cookies. We will update this page before that happens, and visitors in regions where consent is required will be asked first.

Your rights

Wherever you live, you can ask what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, and unsubscribe at any time. Write to us via the contact page; we answer within a month. Residents of the EU and the UK have these rights under the GDPR, residents of California under the CCPA, and we honour them for everyone.

Children

The site is written for adults and we do not knowingly collect anything from children under 16.

Changes

When this page changes, the date at the top changes with it.
