A fishing advent calendar costs between about 80 cents and €7.50 a door in fall 2026, and the price per door says more about a calendar than the price on the box. The US-brand bass calendars from Mystery Tackle Box and Strike King have 12 doors; the fly, Amazon and European ones have 24. The prices come from the makers’ and retailers’ own listings in October 2026, and the contents from what those listings itemize. None of the calendars was opened for this page.
In a November 2023 Walmart deal the Mystery Tackle Box calendar sold for $24.98 with a “$50 value” on the box. The 2026 edition lists at $59.99 with “$70+ value inside”.
What is behind the doors, and what does a door cost?
A lure or a piece of tackle, at anything from 81 cents to €7.46 a door. Every calendar here is a box of numbered doors; what changes is what kind of lure, how many, and for which fish. The 24-door generics mix hard baits, soft plastics and small tackle for any species. The brand calendars pick for one kind of fishing.
| Calendar | Doors | What is behind them | Price, fall 2026 | Per door |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mystery Tackle Box 12 Days of Fishmas 2026 | 12 | 11 bass lures and tackle items from 10+ brands, 3 decals; 3 lineups | $59.99 (maker) | $5.00 |
| Strike King 12 Days of Fishmas V2 | 12 | hard bait, 4 bass and 2 crappie soft plastics, spinnerbait, jig, terminal tackle, swag | $19.96–24.49 (Walmart) | $1.66–2.04 |
| Postfly Trout Fly Fishing 2026 | 24 | 24 guide-picked trout flies, not listed for 2026 | $49.95 presale (maker) | $2.08 |
| ValHome 24 days | 24 | hard and soft baits, spinners, frogs or spoons, by variant | $19.49–26.49 (Walmart) | $0.81–1.10 |
| PLUSINNO 2026 | 24 | poppers, minnows, vibration baits, spoons, soft baits | C$37–39.99 (Amazon.ca) | C$1.54–1.67 |
| Uiseba 24-Day | 24 | tools first: lip gripper, net, hook remover, weights, lures, sunglasses | C$40 (Amazon.ca) | C$1.67 |
| Savage Gear 4Play 2026 | 24 | 4Play hard and soft swimbaits for pike | €160 (France) | €6.67 |
| Westin Premium Predator 2026 | 24 | crankbaits, jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, poppers, glidebaits and soft baits for pike, perch and zander | €179 (Sweden) | €7.46 |
The Canadian and euro prices are what the sources list; the US Amazon listing for PLUSINNO showed no price when this page was written. Per door is the box price divided by the doors, rounded.
Two columns decide the purchase. The doors tell you when the countdown starts: a 24-door calendar runs December 1 to 24, and a 12-door calendar that counts down to Christmas starts in mid-December. The per-door price tells you what kind of lure you are paying for. A dollar a door buys a generic lure; five dollars a door buys a name-brand bass bait.
Bass: Mystery Tackle Box or Strike King?
For a bass angler who owns the obvious baits, Mystery Tackle Box; for everyone else, Strike King. They are the two US-brand bass calendars, and both are called 12 Days of Fishmas.
Mystery Tackle Box (Catch Co.). The 2026 edition has 12 numbered boxes, one a day counting down to Christmas: 11 lures or tackle items, all picked for bass, and a sleeve of three Fishmas decals. The maker names the brands rather than the lures, apart from two how-to videos that give away a popping frog and a worm. The brands are Team Ark, 6th Sense, G-Ratt Baits, X Zone, V&M, Black Label Tackle, BioSpawn, Mustad, Gambler, NetBait, Scum Frog, Snag Proof and Toad Thumper, across crankbaits, soft plastics, jigs, spinnerbaits and frogs. At $59.99 it is the most expensive US calendar per door, and its “$70+ value” claim is the thinnest margin in the group. It ships in the US within seven days of the order. The 2026 calendar comes in three lineups, so two boxes bought together do not repeat; two save 5%, three save 10% and ship free. Retailers carry it too, but Target’s listing describes 10 lures, one decal and a MeatEater surprise, which does not match the maker’s 2026 box: read the contents before buying there.
Strike King. The cheaper of the two, and the one whose listing says door by door what kind of bait is inside. Behind the doors: one bass hard bait, four bass soft plastic types, two crappie soft plastic types, a spinnerbait, a bass jig, bass and crappie terminal tackle, and one swag item. Wired2Fish reports the contents advertised at over $50 retail; Walmart lists it at about $20–24.50 this fall. Version 2 is the box Walmart sold, and cleared, last season; Strike King had not listed a 2026 edition by October 26. The two crappie doors make it the better gift for an angler who fishes a farm pond or a reservoir for whatever bites.
Which one? For a dedicated bass angler, the Mystery Tackle Box spread of small brands is the more likely to hold something new. For everyone else the Strike King box is well under half the price per door, with a clearer list. The best bass lures page shows which of these lure types does the most work in a season.
Which calendar for a fly angler?
Postfly’s 2026 Trout Fly Fishing Advent Calendar: 24 doors, each with a trout fly picked by Postfly’s guides, and new artwork by Josh May. Postfly does not list the 2026 flies; its 2025 calendar held classic nymphs and dry flies such as the Prince Nymph, Pheasant Tail and Elk Hair Caddis, according to Wired2Fish. It is $49.95 on presale against $59.95 regular, $2.08 a door, and ships about November 10. It holds flies only; there is no tippet or fly box behind the doors.
Etsy sellers offer hand-tied fly calendars too, and here the listing needs reading twice. Yahoo’s 2026 roundup flags a $72 Etsy “fly fishing advent calendar” whose 24 pieces are collectibles for display, not flies that will fish. If the listing does not say the flies are tied on real hooks to be fished, assume they are decoration rather than trout flies.
Are the cheap 24-door calendars any good?
For variety, yes; for quality, it varies. The 24-door generic calendars from ValHome, PLUSINNO, MOVINPE, RUISOPE, Larchio and Uiseba cost C$20–50 on Amazon.ca, and $19.49–26.49 for ValHome at Walmart. They give the most lures for the money and the least certainty about what you get.
What they do well is variety. Twenty-four doors of poppers, minnow baits, lipless vibration baits, spoons, frogs and soft plastics is a sampler of nearly every lure family in the types of fishing lures guide, at well under $2 a door. For a beginner, a teenager or an angler who fishes for anything in any water, that spread is the point.
What to watch:
- Uneven quality. Pêcheur Québec’s 2026 guide lists “uneven quality of the items” as the drawback of RUISOPE’s calendar and “contents vary by edition” for PLUSINNO. Its claims about hook sharpness come from the makers’ own listings, not from any test.
- Old stock. Several listings still sell 2024 and 2025 editions. Look for the year in the listing title and the photos.
- Vague contents. Few of these listings itemize door by door; most show a spread of lures without saying which ones you get.
- Tools, not lures. Uiseba’s calendar is built around gear (a lip gripper, a net, a hook remover, weights, sunglasses) with lures in between. Good for a beginner who owns nothing; a letdown for an angler who expected 24 lures.
Is a European calendar worth importing?
Only for a dedicated pike or musky angler, or one who fishes salt water. The European calendars are the expensive end of the table. Savage Gear’s 4Play calendar is €160 for 24 of its 4Play swimbaits. Westin’s 2026 Premium Predator is €179 for 24 lures for pike, perch and zander, and Berkley’s 24-door Predator calendar is €120. Westin’s US site lists its 2026 calendars with a dealer locator, so check a US dealer before importing one.
These are lures a pike angler would buy individually, often in calendar-only colors. But they are sized and colored for European predators. And the price before overseas shipping and US import charges is already close to three times the Mystery Tackle Box calendar.
A saltwater angler has to look to Europe as well; none of the US calendars above is built for salt water. Illex’s Salt Water 2026 calendar holds 24 sea lures in a run of 500 at €199.90, and the French shop that lists it was out of stock on October 26. Westin’s US site lists a 2026 Premium Seabass calendar, without a price.
How do you choose one?
- Name the fish. Bass: Mystery Tackle Box or Strike King. Bass and crappie from the bank: Strike King. Trout on a fly rod: Postfly. Pike: Savage Gear or Westin. Sea fish: Illex or Westin’s Seabass, both from Europe. Anything that bites, or a beginner: a 24-door generic.
- Pick 12 or 24 doors. Twelve means fewer, better lures and a countdown that starts in mid-December. Twenty-four means a door every day from December 1 and cheaper lures behind them.
- Divide the price by the doors. Under $1.50 a door buys generic lures; $2–5 buys a brand. If two calendars cost the same per door, take the one whose listing itemizes the contents.
- Check the edition year and the contents list. A 2026 calendar says 2026 in the listing. A fly calendar should say the flies are fishable.
- Order by early November. Postfly ships about November 10. Mystery Tackle Box says last year’s calendar sold out well before the holidays, and asks for orders by December 15 for Christmas delivery. Pêcheur Québec reports several models selling out by late November.
What if it has sold out?
Buy the lures without the countdown: the same money buys more. A Mystery Tackle Box subscription starts at $19.99 a month on the maker’s page (Pro $31.99, Elite $44.99), and the angler picks the species. A small selection from the best fishing lures for the recipient’s water, or a pair of pliers or a headlamp from the accessories guide, are the alternatives Pêcheur Québec suggests too, and none of them sells out. The gifts for fishermen guide has the rest, sorted by budget and by the kind of fishing he does.
The bargain runs the other way after Christmas. Slickdeals posts from January 2026 show Walmart clearing the Strike King calendar at $4.99 against a $25 list price, about 42 cents a door. A calendar bought in January and put away for next December is the cheapest one in this guide.
The lures hub has a page for every lure family behind those doors, the soft plastics and crankbaits pages among them, for the angler who wants to know what to do with day seven.
