Plano sells 32 tackle boxes, racks and kits, 76 trays and organizers and 18 bags on its own store, from a $3.99 ProLatch 3500 tray to a $289.99 backpack. The trays, racks and bags are built around four tray sizes. For most anglers the right Plano is a few StowAway Classic 3700 trays at $9.99 each, carried in a bag or rack made for them. For one box that does everything on the bank, take the $27.99 Three-Tray. Prices and specifications here are Plano’s own on October 25, 2026, with owner-review counts from its product pages; no box was tested by hand.

A “37” in a Plano model number does not make it a 3700 tray. The ProLatch 3705 and 3715 are half-size boxes, 9 × 7 × 2 in, not the 14 × 9 × 2 in that a 3700 bag is built for.

Which Plano tackle box should you buy?

Start with how you get to the water and what you carry, then pick the Plano series.

  • A first box for worms, bobbers and panfish: the One-Tray, $19.99, or a Three-Tray sold stocked as a kit.
  • One box for everything on the bank: the Three-Tray, $27.99; the six-tray Hip Roof, $49.99, when it has to hold more.
  • A boat or a truck: StowAway Classic 3700 trays in a rack such as the 4-By or Guide Series.
  • Walking creeks and ponds: the Weekend Tackle Bag, which holds four trays and comes with two.
  • Rain, spray or a kayak: the Waterproof StowAway 3700 or the EDGE 3700, with the latch caveats below.
  • Baits up to 12 in long: the Big Game, which holds 40 of them.

Other brands in the same slots, and how to set up a box, are in the tackle box guide.

Plano trays by series and size

Plano’s site sorts its trays by size: 3400 Extra Small, 3500 Small, 3600 Medium and 3700 Large. Within each size, the series decide the price.

Series 3500 3600 3700 What the money buys
ProLatch StowAway $3.99 $6.99 $7.99 (half-size) ProLatch closures, loose dividers
StowAway Classic $7.99 $8.99 $9.99 Rigid pre-cut dividers, one latch, Rustrictor
StowAway Deep — $11.99 $14.99 Room for bigger baits; the 3700 is 3.25 in (8.3 cm) tall
StowAway Waterproof $17.99 $18.99 $19.99 O-ring seal
EDGE $29.99 $34.99 $39.99 Dri-Loc seal, moisture-wicking packet, polycarbonate lid

Rustrictor is Plano’s vapor corrosion inhibitor, a rust-slowing additive in the plastic. The $17.99 for the Waterproof 3500 is Tackle Warehouse’s price; the others are Plano’s. Plano’s store calls both of the first two lines “StowAway Classic”: the ProLatch boxes are the cheaper ones with ProLatch closures in the description.

EDGE is Plano’s premium line, introduced in 2019. Above the plain trays sit EDGE boxes built for one bait: a jerkbait box at $59.99, a frog box at $69.99 and a 3700 hook box at $74.99. The most expensive box in Plano’s tray range is the EDGE Deep Hang Box at $94.99.

What do the numbers on a Plano box mean?

Most Plano numbers name the tray size, but not all of them, and three trip buyers up.

Number What it is Exterior, L × W × H
3449 Pocket box, 5 or 7 compartments, $4.99 6.5 × 3.75 × 1–1.13 in (16.5 × 9.5 × 2.5–2.9 cm)
3500 Small 9.13 × 4.98 × 1.25 in (23.2 × 12.6 × 3.2 cm)
3600 Medium 10.88 × 7.25 × 1.75 in (27.6 × 18.4 × 4.4 cm)
3601 Thin 3600, 4–21 compartments 11 × 7.25 × 1.13 in (27.9 × 18.4 × 2.9 cm)
3700 Large 14 × 9.13 × 2 in (35.6 × 23.2 × 5.1 cm)
3700 Thin / Deep Same footprint, other heights 1.5 in (3.8 cm) / 3.25 in (8.3 cm) tall
3705, 3715 Half-size ProLatch, 4–16 compartments 9 × 7 × 2 in (22.9 × 17.8 × 5.1 cm)

The 3601 suits small terminal tackle: one Tackle Warehouse reviewer says weights and hooks stay in their compartments better than in the deeper 3600.

Old and new StowAways differ. The newer boxes have Rustrictor and rigid pre-cut dividers. An owner of the newer 3700 Deep finds its compartments “narrower and shorter than the old Deep Prolatch Stowaway, model 2-3730-5.” Plano’s page for the new 3700 gives 14 × 9.13 × 2 in in its features but 14 × 7.25 × 1.75 in under its specifications; Tackle Warehouse lists 14 × 9.13 × 2 in. The tackle box guide explains why that matters for a bag.

Which Plano racks and bags hold the trays?

Rack or bag Trays Plano price Also has
2-By Rack System 3600 Two 3600s, included $27.99 sale, $39.99 list Bulk storage under the lid
4-By Rack System 3600 Four 3600s, included $41.99 sale, $59.99 list Bulk storage, clear front cover
Guide Series StowAway Rack System Four StowAways, included $79.99 list, out of stock Top-access storage
Weekend Tackle Bag Holds four, two included $44.99–$54.99 list, some colors on sale from $35.99 Molded waterproof base
Z-Series Tackle Bag Two StowAways included $44.99 sale, $89.99 list No zippers, sold for salt water
Guide Series Tackle Bag 3700 Five 3700s and one 3600 included $118.99 sale, $169.99 list, out of stock Magnetic top for tools and lures

Match the bag to the size you already own: a bag sold for 3600s is built around 11-in trays, not 14-in 3700s, and a half-size 3705 fills only part of a 3700 slot.

Plano’s hard tackle boxes, from one tray to the biggest

A hard box keeps everything in one place, with cantilever trays that swing out over a bulk bin.

  • One-Tray, $19.99, 12.5 × 6 × 7 in, made in the USA. All four owner reviews on Plano’s page give five stars.
  • Three-Tray, $27.99, 14.88 × 6.63 × 8.25 in, made in the USA; the Three-Tray XL is 19.25 × 10 × 9.75 in for $39.99. Plano also still sells its older brass-latch Three-Tray, 16.25 × 9 × 8.38 in, for $24.99 in green and sandstone.
  • Hip Roof, $49.99, 20 × 10.75 × 11.25 in, six trays with 38–46 compartments. Eleven of its 12 owners give five stars.
  • FlipSider Three-Tray, $44.99, 17.25 × 10.5 × 7.75 in, made in the USA, with a top that opens to the baits you use most. The FlipSider Two-Tray, $34.99, is 15.25 × 9.5 × 6.75 in with two deep trays.
  • Drawer boxes: the Guide Series Drawer, $59.99, and the Four-Drawer, $89.99, with four removable bait racks. The $99.99 Three-Drawer adds three removable spinnerbait racks and one StowAway.
  • Hybrid Hip StowAway, $99.99, 20.14 × 12.41 × 12.3 in, a drop-down door over three included StowAways.

What is the biggest Plano tackle box? By its listed size, the Big Game: 21.5 × 13 × 12.5 in, for 40 baits up to 12 in long, $129.99. Its racks lift out for utility boxes.

Which Plano boxes are waterproof?

Only the boxes sold as waterproof have a seal. Plano rates the $19.99 Waterproof StowAway 3700 IPX7, and its lid closes on an O-ring. Owners are less sure: it averages 3.5 of 5 from eight reviews. One two-star owner says it needs “both hands to make sure the lid lines up exactly perfect,” and two say small parts slip between compartments under the lid.

The EDGE 3700 adds a Dri-Loc seal, a moisture-wicking packet and Rustrictor in the base, for $39.99; it averages 3.0 of 5 from four owners. The cheapest sealed Plano is the Waterproof 3400 Classic at $9.99, with three cam-action latches.

The Guide Series Waterproof Case is a dry box, not a tackle tray. Plano sells it for wallets, phones and electronics and rates it “Submersible to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes.” It costs $24.99 for a 3400 to $69.99 for a 3700. Why a sealed box can still rust hooks is covered in the tackle box guide.

What comes in a Plano tackle box kit?

Plano sells its Three-Tray stocked for one kind of fishing, $39.99 each: bass, panfish, catfish, striper and salmon.

  • Bass kit: 18 twist-tail and 18 twin twist-tail bodies, 86 bait-holder hooks, two marabou jigs, two jig heads, split shot, bobbers and snap swivels.
  • Catfish kit: for catfish on bait: 12 Berkley Gulp! catfish chunks, four 3/0 J-hooks, three treble hooks, egg sinkers and three pre-tied leaders.
  • Catch All Two-Tray kit, $29.99: 10 Berkley PowerBait grubs, two jig heads, 10 hooks, five split shot and three bobbers.

The Let’s Fish Three-Tray comes with 180 pieces, $34.99 list and $16.09 on sale, and part of its price goes to the Take Me Fishing program. A kit is an easy present; fishing for beginners covers what else a first day needs.

Who makes Plano tackle boxes, and are they any good?

The Plano trademark belongs to Plano Molding Company, LLC. In March 2021, Pure Fishing, the company behind Berkley and Abu Garcia, agreed to buy Plano Synergy Holdings, whose brands included Plano Molding.

Plano made its first molded-plastic tackle box in 1952 and added cantilevered trays in 1956. By 1969, Plano says, it sold the best-selling tackle box in the world. Its first worm-proof tackle boxes, for soft plastic worms, followed in 1974. The One-Tray, Three-Tray, FlipSider and Catch All boxes are listed as made in the USA. Plano’s warranty covers manufacturing defects for one year from purchase, and its customer service sells replacement parts, including StowAway latches in other colors.

Plano’s boxes reach beyond fishing: Caboodles cosmetic cases in 1987, gun and bow cases in 1995 and Creative Options craft storage in 2007. Tackle Warehouse pitches the ProLatch 3600 for screws, nuts and spare boat parts as well as lures.

Plano’s owner ratings split by type. Simple trays and tray boxes score high: 4.8 of 5 for the StowAway Classic 3600 (10 reviews), 4.8 for the Hip Roof (12) and 4.5 for the StowAway Classic 3700 (34). Boxes that depend on a seal or a door score lower: 3.5 for the Waterproof 3700, 3.0 for the EDGE 3700. The Guide Series Angled Tackle System 3700 averages 2.5 from four. The simple boxes are the safe buy; on sealed boxes and racks, read the latch reviews first.

Where is a Plano tackle box cheapest?

Neither Plano nor the retailers win every time. On October 25, a four-pack of StowAway 3700s cost $29.99 at Tackle Warehouse against $34.99 at Plano. The Z-Series bag went the other way: $79.97 at Tackle Warehouse, $44.99 on sale at Plano. Plano ships free over $75 and takes returns within 30 days.

The cheapest Plano trays are the old ProLatch ones: $3.99 for a 3500 on Plano’s site, $4.99 for a 3449 pocket box at Tackle Warehouse. For gear outside the box, the fishing tackle hub starts with what a first box should hold.

How we chose

The picks come from Plano’s own specifications and prices on October 25, 2026, the owner reviews counted on Plano’s product pages, and Tackle Warehouse’s listings for the older model numbers. No box was handled or tested for this page, and sale prices move.
